Eva and Izanami

(Getting mythological)

Here are my two starting characters for Demo Reel Research and Demo Reel Production. These are concept sketches, so I am still in the process of "finding" them, and their look. First, Eva, the sketches that I have for her so far, and her bio:

Eva is a 17 year old girl belonging to a tribe of hunter-gatherers. She lives in the year 9750 B.C.E. and her tribe, which are nomadic, forages around the Northeastern coast of the African continent.

Eva is a happy-go-lucky girl with a lot of creativity and too much energy. She is always looking for something to occupy herself with, from making jewelry out of anything she finds that isn’t edible, to dancing all over the place or climbing trees. And while hunting is a task usually left to the men and boys of the tribe, Eva will occasionally go after smaller prey, such as fowl, rodents, and reptiles. She will do just about anything to avoid laying around and chatting or telling stories like most of the other women in the tribe do on their spare time. Eva is sometimes made fun off for her inability to sit still by the other women, but she’s usually too busy to notice or care most of the time

While the whole tribe helped to raise Eva, the person she looks up to the most is her grandmother, who happens to be the tribe’s matriarch. Eva looks up to her grandmother for her wisdom, and for the forethought that she puts into all of her actions, but doesn’t look forward to the day when she herself will be the matriarch, and when the tribe will be looking to her for guidance.

Eva has a dark complexion and is a little lanky. She has long dreads which she adorns with beads, and has many of her own creations around her neck, wrists, ankles, and waist. The rest of her attire consists of a “tribal” skirt.

I will return to add more on her later. Next we have Izanami, or just "Nami", for short. Here are the sketches that I have for her so far, as well as for her bio:

Nami (Full name Izanami) is a playful 28 year old “Spear-for-hire” who is a bit rough around the edges. From early on in her life, Nami couldn’t help sticking out from the crowd. Being born into a family of warriors where the eldest male son inherits command of the clan from the father, and where the women are taught to be quiet, dainty, polite, and submissive to the men, Nami never quite fit her given role. It wasn’t uncommon for her to leave the other girls behind to go play rough with the boys, or to get into fights with any of the children in the clan. Being reprimanded only made her more defiant until, at the age of 12, she stole the family’s heirloom spear, “Nagi”, and ran away from home in search of adventure. Though many from the clan have given chase to try to retrieve the spear from her over the years, everyone has returned home empty handed.

Now that she’s out on her own, and after a childhood of being pushed to conform, Nami does her best to stick out. Big red hair, theatric, over the top body paint, loudly colored clothes, shiny bells, and barefoot: That is Nami’s style.

Though it’s easy to label Nami as “antisocial”, the truth is that she only gets along with those who can keep up with her, and lacks respect for all else. The elderly, authority figures, tradition, manners, the law; none deserve undue reverence or respect in her eyes, and less so if they try to slow her down. Thinking things through, planning or reflecting on past choices is really not Nami’s thing. She’s got things to do, places to go, and thrills to experience. When Nami isn’t off picking a fight, for pay or for fun, the she is most likely finding some other way to compete with anyone available. From competing to see who can throw a rock the farthest, to who can hold their breath the longest, no challenge is worth declining for Nami.

I will return to add more on Nami later as well. That's all I have for now. Stay on the lookout for more...

The Year of The Recluse

I've been busy drawing, so I will return to outline the purpose of this blog and...

I'm sorry. I just had a really weird deja vu. I feel like I've typed what I was just about to type just now. Even got a mental image. Weird...

Anyways, I'll come back and say more about the purpose of this blog and share some thoughts on the subject. For now, that's all I got for this one...
